About "Talismans"
According to the artist, these painted wooden boards represent the talismans or lucky charms

that were displayed in people’s homes in ancient times, perhaps even until the Middle Ages.
They typically depict portraits of royalty, religious icons, legendary tales, zodiacs, parables etc.

In the artist's words;

“I could be a recorder, I could be an archaeologist. 
My act of painting often resembles

carefully dusting off the ancient relics, 

pieces of wooden board this time,

on which the figures and motifs unfold themselves. 
If the relic is believed to be very old,

I would sand off the edges of the board,

or I could bury it in soil for some time. 
The written words in my art have

never been deciphered, even by me.

One day, I believe some clever people will read them. 

....
There is such another world, it does exist.

I’ll keep my art going to prove it.”

網代幸介「Talismans」

​

今回のシリーズの板絵は、

紀元前から、中世ごろまでにかけて、

お護りや、縁起ものとして、

庶民の家の玄関や、台所などに飾られていたものです。

描かれている内容は、王家の肖像画であったり、

イコン、神話、干支、ことわざなど、さまざまです。

子供の頃からずっと、私の頭の中には、こことはちがう別の世界があります。
そこへ行くと、自分とはまったくちがった、誰かに変わります。
その誰かの冒険物語を、私は、絵で記録します。
完成した絵を見て、私はいつも、他人事のように喜びます。

私は、時には、遺跡を発掘する、考古学者でもあります。
土埃をはらうように、描いていきます。

すると、だんだんと、絵が浮かび上がってきます。
それが古い時代の板絵でしたら、板の角を丸く削りますし、

しばらくの間、土の中に埋めたりもします。
絵に描かれている文字は、私自身、未だ、解読できていませんが、
きっと、いつか頭の良い学者が、解読してくれるに違いありません。

私は、この、もう一つの世界が実在することを証明するために、

作品を作り続けます。
