Blue Cat Plate
Porcelain transferware plate in cat shape.
The design is originally made for Katazome (Japanese stencil dye) prints, and was turned into transfer paper for this plate.
Transferware is an early modern technique to transfer elaborate design on to ceramic ware. Although it is a kind of print for mass production, the process is mostly done by hands - pressing stencil on to the plate, applying cobalt as glazing pigment - and there would be small differences with each piece. You can also see the different shades of blue in this piece.
