Birds And The Leaves (Chatochayo)

Chakabuki collaborated with Sugi Kentaro, an Ikebana artist, and created sets of teapots and holders named 'Birds And The Leaves'. Based on the motif of a bird resting on a dried leaf, with this series, teapots represent birds, and holders leaves, in the manner of Japanese artistic concept of Mitate (representation).

Please select the leaf (holder) to style with your birdy pot (A) from the pull down menu.

Chakabuki's pieces are made from the clay foraged in Yame area by the artist.

Unglazed. Fired to a high temperature with Yakishime technique.

The surface of some Chakabuki's pieces look like terracotta with rustic texture. Actually the clay is much harder than terracotta, and tightly bound to vitrification. This means the finished pieces are watertight without glazing, and very durable.

Teapot:

Pot (A) wears marks of rice straw twines that was pressed on to the surface to reinforce the clay.

Japanese white lacquer (urushi) is applied on the surface after firing.

Original clay colour is soft orange, which is visible inside the pot.

Hand crafted clay strainer is build inside the pot so that loose tea leaves won't come out from or block the spout.

  • About Artist

Chakabuki is the studio name for potter Hashizume Kayo. Deeply rooted in and intrigued by the land of Yame in Fukuoka, where green tea is the main traditional product, Chakabuki's focus on teaware came naturally. Exploring human interaction with the land and nature, Hashizume forages its wild clay to throw and fire, drawing on early historic clay modeling and firing practices. This in turn inspired her to develop an organic approach to tea drinking and teaware making as a whole.
Recently Hashizume has collaborated regularly with Sugi Kentaro, an ikebana florist, with a series of teapots and holders called Birds On The Leaves.
