Katazome B5 Journal

Katazome B5 Journal

These blank notebooks are made of Washi (Japanese handmade paper) from cover to cover.

Bound in 4-hole non-adhesive style with visible cotton thread.

Edge protection.

60 pages.

Made in Kyoto.

Fine, flexible and sturdy, these Washi papers are great for both writing and drawing. Each leaf consists of a folded paper so that the ink from brush strokes would not transfer onto the other side. Folded pages mean this journal is great as water colour sketchbook and photo album. It would make a perfect gift, guest book, and for personal projects such as collage.

The soft covers are decorated with Katazome (stencil-dyeing) pattern. Stencils had been widely used for dyeing kimono fabrics in Japan. It is a centuries old technique that manages the most elaborate design by dyeing only.

The stencils are made of layers of Japanese paper and coated with persimmon tannin, and cut out into the graphical patterns of traditional motifs. Most of these design patterns are created in this 100 years and the maker holds the rights.

As the cover paper is not bleached, the colours look sober and gives a reminiscence of old folk toys.
