Tohaku Japanese Candle
Hand dipped candle made from Hazenoki wax.
Large size, sold by single candle in box.
The flame of this candle is bright and large thanks for its wax property and also for its handmade wicks. Less smoke and soot is also its notable feature.
Hazenoki, also called 'Japanese Wax Tree', is a shrub similar to Sumac. Its fruits kernel oil has been used for candle making, lacquer varnishing, and medicinal purposes.
Wicks are made of dried Japanese rushes twisted along with Washi paper. Each wick is carefully made by hand.
Due to the natural materials used, each candle slightly varies in its colour, from ochre to grey white.
Each candle burns 4 hours

The maker, Takazawa Candle was founded in 1892, proudly family owned and independent. They produce high quality handmade and plant-based candles in the honest possible way in Nanao, Ishikawa. Although their grade-listed storefront and workshop suffered devastating damage from 2024 new year's day earthquake, they swiftly reorganized their business and are trying to reconstruct and conserve the building that has been much loved with its iconic heritage appeal.
Tohaku candle is inspired by the monochrome painting titled 'Pine Trees' by Hasegawa Tohaku, who lived in the maker's local Nanao in 16th century. Candles are painstakingly hand dipped and made from the raw materials sustainably sourced in Japan.
