Each doll is one-off, and lovingly hand crafted by craftsman based in the northeastern region in Japan.

Size and description:
MN-A 37cm / 14.57 in Yajiro style. Signed by Niiyama Hisashi. Very good condition. A tiny dent on the head.
MN-B 30.5cm / 12 in Togatta-Akiu style. Signed by Yamao. Large grain lines are running on the back. Marks on the head. No varnish.
MN-C 21.5 cm / 8.46 in Naruko style. Head turns with a squeak sound. Very good condition. A small spot near the mouth as pictured.
MN-D 19 cm 7.48 in Zao-Takayu style. Flattened head. Signed by Ishiyama Sanshiro. Excellent condition.
MN-E 17cm / 6.7 in Dark coloured wood is used. Tiny dent on the both sides of the head.
MN-F 12.5 / 5 in Naruko style in Nemariko (resting) body. Head turns with a squeak sound. Excellent condition.

Kokeshi dolls are one of Japan’s most beloved icons of folk art, yet their origins are relatively recent. They arguably first appeared in the early 19th century and have been crafted almost exclusively in the Tohoku region of northeastern Japan.These simple wooden figures became popular keepsakes, symbolizing good health, fertility, and fortune, especially as protectors of children.
Most Kokeshi dolls are painted red, a color believed to ward off diseases like smallpox. The designs vary based on the producing area and are painted either freehand or with horizontal line-drawing on a lathe.
Local hardwood varieties, such as Dogwood, Painted Maple, Macropoda Holly, Japanese Pagoda Tree are used after a drying process. Read more on our blog article.
